The foundation herd sires used in the 1960's and 70's were mainly bulls from the highly respected Wye Plantation in Maryland. Bulls such as Contact of Wye, Franchester of Wye, Countyman of Wye, Shoshone Viking, and PS Power Play greatly improved the genetic base of our herd and left us with a super set of females to move forward with.
Into the 80's and 90's as AHIR, EPD'S and performance records came into play, we used such bulls as: Oscar 711, TA El Tigre 423, Leachman Right Time and Traveler 6807. We considered these bulls to be complete, performance bulls at that time and they had a significant impact on our herd. Hinksons El Primo was a bull we raised that was a true beef bull in every sense. He stamped his progeny with natural thickness and left us a super set of productive daughters.
Sitz Alliance and Rito 6I6 were two bulls that had major impacts on our program as well. We still believe these are two of the most complete bulls ever in the Angus breed. A direct son of Alliance resulted in Hinksons Double Take (pictured). 13635999 His calves consistently outperformed many of the top big-time AI bulls of his time. Double Take has earned Pathfinder status and is one of the best bulls ever raised here at the ranch.
Hinksons Hammer (pictured) 15040015 is a direct result of Rito 6I6 and Sitz Alliance. One of the thickest, gentlest, bulls ever born here. Only to be matched by his son Hinksons Hammer Time. Hammer Time adds a shot of carcass merit and stands alone in the entire Angus breed with his combination of performance, carcass, fertility, docility and fleshing ability. Look him up, 16402435 , plug him in and see how he stacks up against any bull in the breed!!!
Sires such as Connealy Freightliner, BR New Frontier 095, Objective 02T6, and Mytty in Focus have got us where we are today. Hinksons In Focus T816, (pictured) 16239078 is a bull we raised and are currently using, that is a freak in terms of low birth weights combined with explosive growth and eye appeal. His sons have topped our bull sale the last 2 years as well as Oleen Brothers Bull Sale!!!
River Hills Upward X264, 16754489 is a bull we purchased through the River Hills Dispersal that we are very high on. We consider him to be the thickest son of Upward that we have found anywhere!! His progeny are becoming some our favorites.
There is no perfect bull. There will always be give and takes when breeding Angus cattle. What is best for us, in our environment and program, isn't always what fits the ranch down the road. Our cow herd isn't pampered and fluffed. They run out in the hills of Kansas year around and are expected to not only survive but turn a profit. The key is balance when selecting herd sires. Chasing a certain trait will just get you in trouble, but keeping all traits balanced will make you profitable in the long run and keep our customers coming back!!!
